The Driver's Theory Test

Driving Lessons Preston LancashireIn order to gain your driving licence you must first take and pass both parts of the computerised theory and hazard perception test, which is then valid for 2 years. After passing this exam you will then be able to book your practical driving test providing you have taken the required training and have reached the test standard as advised by your instructor. Help and advice is available with your theory.

The cost of the theory test is £30.00 (as at 01/04/08)

The Practical Driving Test

This test lasts approximately 40 minutes and is conducted by a DSA examiner from your local test centre. The test also consists of two questions being asked on ‘show me tell me’. These are two maintenance type questions about the vehicle.

The costs of the practical test are:
Weekdays - £56.50
Weekend & Evenings - £67.00

Pass Plus

This is a minimum of 6 hours, covering all aspects of your driving and is aimed at the newly qualified driver who wishes to gain more confidence and to be prepared to deal with difficult driving situations. Pass Plus builds on your existing skills and knowledge and will teach you how to anticipate, plan and deal with all kinds of hazards, for example: driving in town, driving in all weathers, driving on rural roads, driving at night, driving on dual carriageways and also motorways.

You do not need to take an exam but you will need to complete the course and will be given a Pass Plus Certificate after completion from the DSA. Some insurance companies may even give a discount on their insurance up to as much as 30% so this is well worth looking into.

The ‘New Driver Act’

Once you have passed your test or have gone on to pass the Pass Plus scheme you must be aware of the ‘New Driver Act’. This Act means that you must not accumulate six or more penalty points on your licence within the first two years or you will automatically have your licence revoked by the DVLA. You will then have to re-take your practical driving test again as well as your theory test.
